Wisdom of the Body

Jul 29, 2021

Listen to environmental microbiologist Tom Lie explain his lifelong fascination with studying why certain microbes thrive in one environment, but not in another. Discover how microbes act around other microbes, how they affect our bodies and our actions, and how we impact them. Learn why microbes are used to create fermented foods, and why you have them inside your poop. Gain a deeper understanding of the microbiome inside and outside your body. Move over dogs... microbes may actually be man’s best friend!

In this episode, Heather and Tom discuss:

  • Learn about bacteria and archaea, and how such microbes interact with and are impacted by their environments both inside and outside the human body.
  • Microbes that live in more extreme environments
  • How we can tell if a bug is bad vs. good
  • The importance of transferring the mother’s vaginal microbiome to a newborn baby born via cesarean section (c-section)
  • Whether microbiome tests and products that claim to alter your gut microbiome really work
  • If one microbe can be good for one person and bad for another
  • How a microbe evolves to thrive in an environment

Tom Lie is an environmental microbiologist with an interest in microorganisms that thrive in extreme environments. Tom was born and grew up in Singapore, where he went through primary and secondary school education. He then studied in the U.S. during high school before returning to Singapore for two years of mandatory army service. He then pursued his bachelors and PhD in Microbiology at the university of Connecticut, where he focused on bacterial growth on sulfur compounds in the absence of air. He furthered his education as a postdoctorate fellow at the University of Washington, where he cut his teeth in the field of genetics for these same organisms. https://faculty.washington.edu/leighj/contact.html
